I am the youngest of four and the only girl. Growing up with brothers, I was always outdoors and forced to be active in some form or fashion. I participated in track and field from elementary to high school.
In college, I gained 30 pounds quickly. Suddenly she went from size 8 to 13, and got depressed every time she stepped on a scale. After going to the campus clinic, she learned that she had high blood pressure and cholesterol. The balance between college and work, made it difficult to engage in other activities. I was less concerned about the type of food she ate and just grabbed the cheapest and quickest foods available, which were most often the unhealthiest.
My 21st birthday present to herself was the decitosion to take control of her life. That day marked the turning point where I began a journey on the road to a healthier lifestyle. The following day, I cleaned out her refrigerator and cabinets and threw out all bad foods and restocked them with healthier options, and never turned back.
In the beginning, I was far too ashamed to go to the campus gym, so I invested in some video tapes (the first 3 sets of Tae-bo tapes by Billy Blanks are my all time favorite), a treadmill, free weights, and a home gym with resistance bands and a bench with the leg attachments. I began learning more about nutrition and exercise/cardio plans.
I completed the Body For Life Challenge and shortly after went on to get a fitness trainer certification. I gained a wealth of knowledge about nutrition. In doing so, I developed a more solid nutrition and weight training/cardio program and watched my body transform in a matter of 4 months. One day, I flipped through a Women's Muscle magazine and saw Monica Brant. That moment began yet a new chapter in my life. I trained hard and ate clean. The following year, I competed in my first figure competition and placed first winning my pro-card.
I took some time off from the stage and began competing in outdoor track as a member of USATF, competing in 100m and 200m in the master’s division with the Atlanta Track Club.
Over the years, as a personal trainer and aerobics instructor, I have worked with a very diverse clientele. I had great pleasure working with individuals at different fitness levels, ages, ethnicities, and genders. As an IFBB Professional Figure Competitor, I strive to be a positive example especially for women and youth to help them understand the importance being healthy and incorporating healthy eating and some type of activity into their lifestyle.
